'For the purposes of a report for the Army Commander on captured German defences in the HINDENBURGH Line sent Sergeant PLANT forward to obtain particulars of dug out locations and conditions of the various trenches in the newly captured area. Apart from the heavy shelling which was proceeding Sergeant PLANT carried a great deal of this work in shallow or almost non-existent trenches under close view of the enemy. In spite of this however, Sergeant PLANT carried out the work thoroughly, and brought back much reliable information that was of the greatest assistance in checking my own reconnaissance for the report. Sergeant PLANT has freqently carried out difficult tasks of this nature since the division arrived in France and is an extremely valuable N.C.O.'
Returned to Australia

PLANT, Eric Clive Pegus

Picture
Lieutenant Colonel
49th Battalion

Awarded Distinguished Service Order
'For conspicuous good service as a zealous and capable Brigade Major in France from25th March 1916, onwards, including work in the line at Fleurbaix and at Rue Marile, as well as the actions on the Somme near Posieres from 26th July to 26th August.  He has proved himself cool in action and at all times a gallant and most reliable Staff Officer.  Major Plant has successfully used his powers of initiative action in carrying out his duties for the general welfare of the Brigade.  He has done excellent work as a detachment commander at the Anzac Landing, ans as Regimental Adjutant, 9th Battalion at Anzac (wounded).'
Awarded Bar to Distinguished Service Order
'During the action near Bullecourt on 3rd May 1917, Major Plant rendered conspicuous and distinguished service as Brigade Major remaining continuously on duty for over 48 hours.  His gallant work under Artillery fire in supervising and reorganisation of broken Infantry and later in the evening, rallying stragglers from the right flank was most valuable; in both cases energy and coolness were required.  By his clear and accurate reports on the situation as it developed, Major Plant rendered as great assistance as by his efforts to secure timely co-operation in maintaining the captured trenches.'
