Private 31st Battalion Studio portrait of 1738 Private Dick Richard Palmer, 31st Battalion of Coombe Station via Dalby, Qld. A well sinker prior to enlistment he embarked with the 2nd Reinforcements on HMAT Kyarra (A55) on 3 January 1916. He died of sickness on 5 December 1916, aged 30 years. On 27 November 1916 he had been recommend for the Military Medal for unspecified gallantry at Guedecourt but died before it was approved. This medal is not awarded posthumously and therefore there is no record on his personal file and his family probably remained unaware of the recommendation. PATCH, Francis Edward

Sergeant 14th Field Artillery Brigade Studio portrait of 2377 Sergeant (Sgt) Francis Edward Patch, 14th Brigade Field Artillery, of Crow's Nest, Qld. A mill hand before enlisting in August 1915, Sgt Patch left Australia for Egypt with the 16th Reinforcements of the 2nd Light Horse Regiment in March 1916 and transferred to the 14th Brigade Field Artillery before its arrival in France for service on the Western Front in May 1916. He was wounded at Messines in June 1917, and was awarded the Military Medal (MM) for bravery in the field. Sgt Patch was killed by German artillery whilst the brigade was moving from Ypres towards the front line near Hooge, Belgium, on the 29 September 1917, aged 28. www.awm.gov.au P07919.001 |

A jackeroo from Brisbane, Qld prior to enlistment, Pte Paten embarked with the 13th Reinforcements from Brisbane on HMAT Seang Choon on 4 May 1916. Initially transferring to the 31st Battalion, he was later transferred to the 49th Battalion and promoted to Lance Corporal. Studio portrait of brothers 4187 Private (Pte) Alexander Paterson and 4188 Pte William Paterson, both of 26th Battalion, and of Blackstone, Qld. Both miners, the brothers enlisted together on 18 September 1915 and embarked from Brisbane aboard HMAT Commonwealth on 28 March 1916. Pte William Paterson was killed in action in France on 5 November 1916, aged 24. Pte Alexander Paterson returned to Australia on 18 January 1919.

Private 49th Battalion Studio portrait of 3889 Private (Pte) James Thomas Paterson (Patterson), 49th Battalion and wife Elizabeth Paterson (nee Cahill) on their wedding day. A farmer from Wallumbilla, Qld, with two years service in the Citizen's Military Force (CMF), Paterson enlisted on 31 August 1915. He embarked from Brisbane aboard HMAT Wandilla (A62) with the 9th Reinforcements of the 25th Battalion on 31 January 1916, and on 2 February 1916 joined the 49th Battalion. PEARCE, Henry Hathaway

Private 9th Battalion Studio portrait of 528 Private (Pte) Henry Hathaway Pearce, 9th Battalion. A carpenter from Maryborough, Qld prior to enlistment, Pte Pearce embarked with E Company from Brisbane on HMAT Omrah on 24 September 1914. Originally reported as missing, a later Court of Inquiry determined that he had been killed during the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 1915. He is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Turkey. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. Platt was taken on strength and transferred to the 11th Brigade Field Artillery and mustered to the rank of Gunner (Gnr) on 17 March 1916. Gnr Platt died of wounds on the 25 December 1916, aged 20. Driver 2nd Light Horse Regiment Studio portrait of 195 Driver (Acting Sergeant) John Price Platt, A Squadron, 2nd Light Horse Regiment, of Beaudesert, Qld. A labourer prior to enlistment he embarked on board HMAS Star of England (A14) on 24 September 1914. He was promoted to the rank for Corporal (Cpl); he received a Mention in Despatches for conspicuous gallantry and devotion in the field on 14 July 1918. According to the recommendation "he was in charge of a detached post of VYSE POST and showed exceptional coolness and zeal throughout the action. When the enemy commenced to retire, he followed them, sniping for a considerable distance thus single handed inflicting many casualties on the enemy. His work throughout has been exemplary."
