Studio portrait of 195 Driver (Acting Sergeant) John Price Platt, A Squadron, 2nd Light Horse Regiment, of Beaudesert, Qld. A labourer prior to enlistment he embarked on board HMAS Star of England (A14) on 24 September 1914. He was promoted to the rank for Corporal (Cpl); he received a Mention in Despatches for conspicuous gallantry and devotion in the field on 14 July 1918. According to the recommendation "he was in charge of a detached post of VYSE POST and showed exceptional coolness and zeal throughout the action. When the enemy commenced to retire, he followed them, sniping for a considerable distance thus single handed inflicting many casualties on the enemy. His work throughout has been exemplary." Cpl Platt returned to Australia on 15 November 1918. His brother 3414 Gunner Edward Platt, 11 Field Artillery died of wounds on 25 December 1916. (See P09070.002).
